ConnectHomeUSA Free Tablet: What HUD Residents Should Know
ConnectHomeUSA helps HUD-assisted communities build local digital-inclusion programs around affordable internet, free or affordable computing devices and digital-skills training. A ConnectHomeUSA free tablet may be available through a local partnership, but HUD does not guarantee a tablet to every assisted household.
ConnectHomeUSA is not a nationwide individual tablet application. Device opportunities depend on the participating community, local partners, available funding, inventory and the rules of the specific offer.
What is ConnectHomeUSA?
ConnectHomeUSA is a HUD initiative that helps participating HUD-assisted communities reduce the digital divide. It gives community organizations a framework for bringing together housing providers, internet companies, nonprofits and other partners to improve digital access for residents.
It is community-based
ConnectHomeUSA works through participating HUD-assisted communities rather than operating as one national tablet fulfillment company.
It brings partners together
Local housing organizations can work with nonprofits, internet providers, private companies and other organizations to develop digital-access solutions.
Tablets are one possible part
Computing devices can be included in a local digital-inclusion strategy, but a tablet is not automatically issued to every resident.
For the broader distinction between government eligibility and companies that actually provide devices, read our free government tablet guide .
ConnectHomeUSA focuses on three parts of digital access
A device has limited value without a usable internet connection or the skills needed to use it. HUD’s approach treats these needs as connected.
Free or affordable internet
Communities work to connect residents with affordable in-home broadband options and other locally available connectivity resources.
Free or affordable computing devices
Local initiatives can help residents access computers, laptops, tablets or other appropriate devices through participating partners and community resources.
Digital-skills training
Training can help residents safely use the internet, search for work, access education, communicate online and make better use of their devices.
Does ConnectHomeUSA give residents a free government tablet?
Not automatically. ConnectHomeUSA creates a framework that participating communities can use to improve access to affordable devices. The actual free tablet, discounted tablet or computer must come from a local partner or other available resource.
Two ConnectHomeUSA communities can have different device programs. One may have donated tablets, another may offer discounted computers, and another may currently have no individual device distribution at all.
HUD supports digital inclusion and helps participating communities develop locally tailored solutions.
Housing organizations and community leaders identify local needs and work with appropriate partners.
Availability, model, quantity, condition and cost depend on the individual device program.
HUD assistance alone should not be interpreted as a guaranteed free-tablet entitlement.
Who may find ConnectHomeUSA free tablet help?
ConnectHomeUSA is designed around HUD-assisted communities. Whether an individual resident can access a device depends on participation by their housing community and the resources being offered locally.
Public housing residents
Public housing authorities can participate in ConnectHomeUSA and develop digital-inclusion resources for residents in their communities.
Residents of participating HUD-assisted multifamily housing
Multifamily housing organizations serving HUD-assisted residents can also take part in ConnectHomeUSA efforts.
Residents served by participating Tribal housing organizations
ConnectHomeUSA has included Tribes and Tribally Designated Housing Entities among participating communities.
Other residents served through selected HUD community partners
The 2024 expansion also included selected organizations connected with other HUD-assisted housing and homelessness programs.
ConnectHomeUSA works through a local partner network
This partnership model explains why a free tablet offer can vary so much from one HUD-assisted community to another.
The device provider may not be HUD
ConnectHomeUSA allows communities to build locally tailored solutions. The organization actually supplying a tablet can therefore be a nonprofit, private company, local program or another participating partner.
Identify the organization actually providing or subsidizing the tablet.
Device donations and funding can be temporary or limited by inventory.
A community may have its own resident, housing or program criteria.
“Affordable device” does not always mean completely free.
How to check for a ConnectHomeUSA free tablet
Confirm your housing community
Start with the housing authority, property manager, resident-services office or other organization that manages the HUD-assisted community where you live.
Ask whether ConnectHomeUSA resources are active
Participation in the initiative does not mean every digital-access resource is available continuously.
Ask specifically about devices
Find out whether the current local offer includes tablets, laptops, desktop computers or another device type.
Check resident requirements
Local programs may require proof of residency, housing participation or other information before providing a device.
Verify cost and device condition
Check whether the tablet is free, discounted, donated, new or refurbished and whether any other conditions apply.
HUD assistance and free tablet eligibility are not always the same
A resident can live in HUD-assisted housing without automatically qualifying for every tablet offer. ConnectHomeUSA device opportunities can use local rules that differ from Lifeline or other assistance-based tablet offers.
Check free tablet eligibility →This may connect you with resources offered within a participating HUD-assisted community.
The tablet partner may have separate eligibility, inventory and distribution rules.
Lifeline qualification should not be assumed solely because someone receives HUD housing assistance unless an applicable qualifying route is established.
Always identify which program or organization is supplying the device before applying.
How ConnectHomeUSA expanded
The initiative began with a narrower focus on the homework gap and gradually expanded toward broader digital inclusion for HUD-assisted residents.
ConnectHome launched
HUD began the original ConnectHome demonstration with 28 participating communities, including a Tribal nation.
ConnectHome became ConnectHomeUSA
The initiative was renamed as HUD continued expanding its digital-inclusion work.
100 communities reached
HUD reported reaching its goal of onboarding 100 ConnectHomeUSA communities.
97 communities selected in the expansion
HUD announced 97 communities for the newer ConnectHomeUSA expansion, including new and returning participating organizations.
The focus remains digital inclusion
HUD continues to describe ConnectHomeUSA as a platform for locally tailored efforts involving affordable internet, computing devices and digital-skills resources.
Old ConnectHomeUSA pages may mention ACP
Some older HUD and community materials promoted the Affordable Connectivity Program because ACP was active at the time. ACP later ended on June 1, 2024, so an old ConnectHomeUSA page mentioning ACP enrollment should not be treated as a current ACP application.
ConnectHomeUSA did not end when ACP ended
ACP was one broadband affordability resource used during part of ConnectHomeUSA’s history. ConnectHomeUSA is a separate HUD digital-inclusion initiative, so the end of ACP should not be confused with the end of every ConnectHomeUSA community effort.
Compare a ConnectHomeUSA tablet with other free tablet providers
If no local ConnectHomeUSA device is currently available, a household may still encounter other legitimate assistance or provider offers. Those programs have their own eligibility, coverage and device rules.
Identify the organization
Determine exactly who is supplying the tablet rather than assuming the word “government” means HUD is shipping it.
Check eligibility
Local HUD resources, Lifeline offers and other device programs can use different qualification rules.
Check the device
Verify model, storage, connectivity, condition and whether another model can be substituted.
Check the complete cost
A device described as affordable or discounted should not be represented as completely free if a payment is required.
Verify ConnectHomeUSA through HUD
HUD’s current program information describes ConnectHomeUSA as a public-private digital inclusion platform for HUD-assisted households and explains its focus on affordable internet, computing devices and digital-skills training.
ConnectHomeUSA Free Tablet FAQs
Does ConnectHomeUSA give you a free tablet?
Not automatically. ConnectHomeUSA helps HUD-assisted communities develop digital-inclusion programs that can include free or affordable devices. The actual tablet depends on a local partner and available resources.
Is ConnectHomeUSA a government tablet program?
It is a HUD initiative, but it should not be described as a national program that directly mails a free tablet to every eligible person. Its purpose is broader digital inclusion.
Who can benefit from ConnectHomeUSA?
Resources are designed for residents of participating HUD-assisted communities. Actual local participation and available services depend on the housing organization and its partners.
Does having Section 8 or HUD assistance guarantee a free tablet?
No. Receiving HUD housing assistance does not by itself guarantee that a free tablet is available. Check whether your local housing organization has a current device program and what requirements apply.
What kinds of devices can ConnectHomeUSA help with?
ConnectHomeUSA focuses on affordable computing devices generally. Depending on the local partnership, resources could involve tablets, laptops, desktops or other appropriate computing equipment.
Is every ConnectHomeUSA device free?
No. HUD describes the initiative in terms of free or affordable devices. A local program can therefore offer a donated device, discounted device or another arrangement.
Where do ConnectHomeUSA tablets come from?
Devices can come through local partnerships with nonprofits, private companies, community organizations or other participating resources. The supplying organization should be verified for each offer.
Is ConnectHomeUSA the same as Lifeline?
No. ConnectHomeUSA is a HUD digital-inclusion initiative. Lifeline is a federal communications benefit with its own eligibility rules. A household may encounter both, but they should not be treated as the same program.
Is ConnectHomeUSA the same as ACP?
No. ACP was a separate broadband affordability program and ended on June 1, 2024. ConnectHomeUSA is a separate HUD initiative and older ConnectHomeUSA material may mention ACP because it was active at the time.
How do I find out whether my housing community has a tablet offer?
Contact the housing authority, property manager, resident-services office or other organization responsible for your HUD-assisted community and ask what ConnectHomeUSA or other digital-access resources are currently available to residents.
ConnectHomeUSA can create access. It does not promise the same tablet to every resident.
If you are looking for a ConnectHomeUSA free tablet or another free government tablet, first confirm your local HUD-assisted community’s resources. Then verify who provides the free tablet, whether it is currently available and what conditions apply.
